A Winnipeg salon is coming together to help a paramedic badly burned in a house explosion this week.

"We were just kind of horrified to hear that their home blew up, so we all kind of sprang into action," said Barb Miles of Essentique Spa and Salon.

Winnipeg paramedic Corey Schroeder was seriously injured in the blast on Tuesday night on Apple Lane.

His girlfriend, Dana Johnson, works at Essentique Spa and Salon.

The spa has decided to fundraise for Schroeder and his family to help cover costs of the recovery and items that were lots.

Friends say the expecting father has burns on 70 per cent of his body, but his condition has improved.

"He no longer has a breathing tube in, he can communicate now, which is great, but he still has a long way to go, stuff yet to go," said Danielle Strachan.

Co-workers at the salon say the couple had moved into a new house and have lost everything on top of coping with the injuries.

Donations can be made at Essentique on Academy Road or St. Mary's Road. People can also visit gofundme.com and enter “Courage for Corey” to make a donation.

The exact cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation.
