A Winnipeg family is desperately searching for their dog Callie, after she was set lose by a thief who broke into their home Wednesday morning.

Leslie Speirs’ daughter and son-in-law live at the home.

Speirs says neighbours told them they saw people approach the house in Wolseley, force their way in and leave with plenty of stolen items.

"The break in was a serious one. There were numerous things stolen and some damage to the house but all we care about at this point is getting Callie back," Speirs said.

Speirs believes Callie was set loose sometime during the break-in.

She explained that Callie is a rescue dog her daughter Kristy Devantier and her husband adopted two-and-a-half years ago.

"They have poured in a great deal of love and affection into her. She's their baby. She was in their wedding photos taken earlier this year," she said.

The family also believes Callie did all she could to initially scare off the thieves.

They explained the dog even ripped a frame off of the back door of the home, forcing the intruders to go around.

“I’m sure the dog was terrified and she showed resistance which is why we're concerned she's injured,” Speirs said.

Speirs explained that her family members have all taken time off work to search for Callie.

They are asking those in Wolseley, North Portage and River Heights to keep an eye out for their dog.

“As soon as we get a call we are going to be there to bring our Callie back,” Speirs added.
