A conservative community in southern Manitoba is hosting its first ever Pride festival.

In July, Steinbach will hold a Pride march, similar to the one in Winnipeg, which has been going on since 1987.

Back in 2013, some town officials and religious leaders opposed a bill mandating schools to allow gay-straight alliances.

An area student fought to have one at his school and eventually, the bill was passed.

More recently, a Manitoba mother called for same-sex education in the Hanover School Division after her son was bullied for having two moms.

Steinbach's Pride march is set for July 9.
