A recent speed awareness campaign has revealed that thousands of Manitoba drivers are going too fast.

Manitoba Public Insurance said that 38,000 vehicles were monitored from May 1-6 during the Citizens on Patrol Program called “Spotlight on Speed.”

The campaign found that 25 per cent, or 9,400 of those vehicles were exceeding the posted speed limit across 29 communities in the province.

Speeding claims roughly 21 lives every year in Manitoba and causes about 600 injuries per year, according to a release from MPI.

“Speeding is a high-risk driving behaviour that can have tragic consequences. Last year was the deadliest year on Manitoba highways in a decade and some of those crashes were speed related. The goal for 2017 is to make our roadways safer for everyone,” said MPI Vice-President and CAO Ward Keith.

MPI is encouraging motorists to be alert this July long weekend. Over the last five July long weekends, MPI said speed was a factor in more than 200 collisions that caused injuries.
