Thousands of runners have took over the streets of Winnipeg for the 35th annual Manitoba Marathon.

The event got underway at 6:30 Sunday on campus at the University of Manitoba.

Runners followed the 42-kilometer course through the city before winding up back at the University.

In addition to the full-marathon, there was also a half-marathon, a 10K run and a marathon relay.

Kenyan-born Winnipeger Evans Maiko won the men's marathon with a time of 2:28:17.

Brian Walker finished second with a time just 20 seconds off the Maiko's pace.

Gina Tranquada of Winnipeg won the women's race with a time of 3:02:03.
