Winnipeg police have charged two male youths in connection with a police pursuit that sent six people to hospital early Monday morning.

Police said they were pursuing a vehicle heading west on Redwood Avenue around 2:45 a.m.. Less than a minute after the pursuit began, the suspect vehicle crashed into the side of a car at the intersection with McPhillips Street and Redwood.

The driver of the suspect vehicle fled on foot. Paramedics took two adults in the second vehicle and four youths in the suspect vehicle to hospital, all with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said both suspects are 16-years-old. One faces numerous charges including fleeing from a Peace Officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and three counts of causing bodily harm. The other youth is charged with possessing property obtained by crime and three counts of failing to comply with undertaking.

Even though the provincial unit that looks into serious incidents involving police has taken over the investigation, Winnipeg police have still charged the two youth.

Neither the IIU nor the Winnipeg Police Service has released any information about why the officers were pursuing the vehicle.

Police direct any inquiries about the incident to the IIU.
