Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz could be forced to pay back a tax break on a large home he owns in Arizona.

According to the Maricopa County Assessor’s office, where the house is located, the property is listed as Katz’s primary residence. That allows the mayor to receive a $600 credit every year. Katz has owned the 4,400-square-foot home since 2012.

An official with the office said Katz might have to refund the money because it’s not his primary home.

His primary residence is a million-dollar home in Winnipeg's Tuxedo neighbourhood.

The Maricopa County official also said Katz did not declare the Arizona residence as his primary house. The assessor’s office made that call.

A spokesperson for Katz said the mayor did not know the Arizona property was listed as his primary residence and that it was a mistake made by the title company reporting to the assessor’s office.

The Arizona house has a 2014 assessed cash value of $934,500.

Mayor Katz was not available for comment on July 22. His spokesperson said he is away on vacation with family in Canada.
