Police in the East District have seen an increase in reports of thefts from vehicles parked in personal driveways.

The Winnipeg Police Service has released a few tips on how to prevent thefts from vehicles:

1. Keep vehicle visible

Police say thieves like to work in private and, therefore, are advising people not to park their cars where they are hidden behind larger vehicles, fences or foliage.

2. Lock windows and doors

Police say many thefts happen as a result of unlocked vehicles and are urging people to ensure their windows and doors are locked.

3. Activate vehicle alarm

Police say if you have one, use it.

4. Hide your valuables

Keeping valuables out of sight is key when trying to avoid thefts. Police say if thieves can’t see it, they are less likely to act on impulse. Police are also warning people that the glove box is not the best place to keep valuables either, as thieves know to look there and they’re easy to break into.

Police are also stressing the importance of removing the garage door opener out of the vehicle. Thieves will use it to get inside garages and into homes if they can get access.

Police are also reminding residents that break-ins can occur anywhere, regardless of what neighbourhood one lives in. They said the thieves are not targeting specific vehicles either.
