The City of Winnipeg announced Thursday morning that Supt. Devon Clunis will be appointed as Winnipeg’s 17th chief of police.

Clunis has been a member of the Winnipeg Police Service for 25 years and has served in a variety of areas, including traffic and uniform patrol, along with organizational development and duty office.

The city's chief administrative officer Phil Sheegl paid tribute to outgoing Winnipeg Police Chief Keith McCaskill in a statement.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank outgoing Chief Keith McCaskill for his loyal and steadfast service to Winnipeggers, and acknowledge his contributions to our city’s safety,” he said.

Mayor Sam Katz welcomed Clunis Thursday in statement.

“Clunis has shown uncompromising character as a member of the Winnipeg Police Service.  I welcome his appointment to this very important role," said Katz.

Clunis will be sworn in as Winnipeg’s chief of police in a ceremony at a later date yet to be announced.

“I’m passionate about this city. I want to do the very best I can for the organization and for our city,” said Clunis on Thursday.

Keith McCaskill, who has been chief since December 2007, is set to retire in December when his current term ends.
