Crews responded to a blaze in Beausejour early Tuesday morning at the Knysh Funeral Chapel.

RCMP said no injuries were reported. No bodies slated for burial were inside the funeral home at the time of the fire.

Crews responded around 12:30 a.m. March 19.

Four fire departments helped battle the blaze amidst bitter cold temperatures.

"We get some guys to warm up in the rescue and then put fresh guys out in the line so the weather was a challenge. But it didn’t stop us. That’s a good thing,” said Jamie Kines, Beausejour fire chief.

Damage is estimated at close to $1 million.

The building was one of the first built in the town northeast of Winnipeg.

“It means a lot when you lose heritage like that, your identity,” said Ed Dubray, Beausejour deputy mayor.

The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner and RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
