The Manitoba Junior Hockey League final kicked off tonight with a special tribute to an injured player.

Braden Pettinger wheeled himself onto the ice and dropped the puck at Friday night’s game in Portage la Prairie.

The team announced they'll retire his jersey and hang it in the rafters at PCU Centre.

The Portage Terriers player was paralyzed in a game Nov. 12 when he fell into the boards.

He spent time in hospital and is undergoing occupational therapy.

He made his first appearance back at the arena since his injury as the terriers started their series with the Steinbach Pistons.
