The family of a teen killed in a crash near Bishop Grandin Boulevard and St. Mary's Road spoke out on Wednesday.

Amutha Subramaniam, 17, was one of two people killed in the collision, which happened shortly before 3 a.m. on Oct. 31. A suspect is charged with impaired driving.

Family members say Amutha was in her first year of university and was making plans to pursue an MBA.

"She was very, very funny. Her sense of humour is beyond anything I've known. She's been the one to cut tension in any situation," said Anita Subramaniam, Amutha's sister.

Amutha's friend Senhit Mehari, 19, also died following the collision.

A third woman, 18, remains in hospital in critical condition. The three women were travelling with two others in a Pontiac Sunfire.

They were returning from a Halloween party when their vehicle was t-boned by a Chevy Cavalier, driven by a 17-year-old girl, who was later charged with driving impaired causing death and criminal negligence causing death.

Police say the 17-year-old driver had been drinking and was speeding. It's believed she was also texting when she ran a red light before the collision.

"This is not something you can recover from. I mean it's impacted us, but for her, I can't even imagine. I couldn't even live with myself," said Anita.

Both Subramaniam's family and Mehari's family believe the fatal crash goes beyond just the suspect charged.

"I don't blame her. I blame society. This is a societal problem," said Yohannes Mehari on Monday. He is Senhit Mehari's father.

Family described Senhit Mehari as a "very loving, smiling girl."

Relatives say Amutha was very involved in her community and in the Tamil pavilion at Folklorama, where her dance students will now carry on her memory.
