A potential mayoral candidate wants to cancel the $600 million rapid transit route to the University of Manitoba.

Coun. Scott Fielding says that money could be better spent on fixing and expanding Winnipeg's road network.

He wants Winnipeggers to provide feedback with an online petition.

Extending Chief Peguis Trail and the William Clement Parkway to build an inner ring road was among the projects Fielding touted instead. He also says the money could be used to construct an underpass at Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue.

Fielding says the rapid transit project may be millions of dollars over budget. The bus corridor is cost-shared with the Province.
