A quiet residential street in River Heights became a crime scene Monday morning after a serious assault sent a man to hospital in critical condition.

Emergency services and police found a man badly injured in a home in the 100 block of Lindsay Street just after 2 a.m.

“We did identify an individual that had sustained serious injuries. That individual was conveyed from the scene in critical condition,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen of the Winnipeg Police Service.

Denise Lavoie lives just down the street and said she moved to the area two years ago because it seemed quiet and safe.

Monday morning she woke up to sirens.

“I just assumed it was traffic offenses. I had no idea that type of activity was going on,” said Lavoie.

In the morning, Lavoie and her neighbours found the home where the incident took place taped off, with police and cadet cars lined up on their street.

Police are remaining tight-lipped about the events surrounding the assault and have not released the man’s age or the circumstances surrounding the assault. All police would say was that the man was in his 20s.

“We don’t want to speculate what took place. We want those interviews to be completed so that we can gather factual information,” said Michalyshen. “We don’t want to taint those interviews.”

One area resident said a woman in her 40s and a young adult male lived in the home with their kids.

Lavoie said she knew the couple only from passing by the home.

Officers, including the forensic identification unit, remained on scene late in the day Monday investigating. Police said further information would be made available Tuesday.
