The Forks has unveiled drawings for its ambitious plans for 12 acres across from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Two surface parking lots will be transformed into a mixed use of parking, public space, retail and residential.

A total of 500 condo or apartment units will rise along with 700 public parking spaces. A plaza and green space will be made available for families, other visitors and people living in the area.

Some of the focus is on connecting The Forks with the rest of downtown, said officials.

"This idea of having the whole site flow and link into Portage and Main and we've got other big ideas of going over the rail line and the like,” said Jim August, CEO of The Forks North Portage.

Most people who CTV showed the plans to on June 27 said the concept is a good fit for the area.

"It rejuvenates downtown," said Sheryl Burdett.

Some said, however, the plans aren't green enough.

"They've built too many buildings around here. We've lost too much green space already so I would say (have) more green space," said Lu Derksen.

The Forks estimates it will take 10 years to complete the entire development.

A large chunk of the property, known as Parcel 4, was the site of a failed indoor water park project.
