Southern Manitoba can expect heavy rain and thunderstorms Saturday evening and into nighttime, spilling over to Sunday.

"We have been spoiled for quite some time,” said Justin Hobson, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“We had above average temperatures in April,” he said. “It's almost payback time.”

Hobson said the impacts of the storm system coming will be felt across much of the southern part of the province. He said the bulk of the storm will come after supper on Saturday with 50 – 70 mm of rain expected by end of Sunday.

An arctic cold front is working its way south and is expected to meet up with the low pressure storm system from the states resulting in freezing rain, ice pellets and snow.

"It's quite common for us to have storm systems this time of year during the long weekend,” said Hobson.

“We call this the transition season. Summer is battling winter.”

Winnipeggers can expect about 5 cm of snow Sunday night and very strong winds of 60 to 80 km from the north.

Those who are at the cottage are advised to stay of off the water Sunday as winds increase.

Warmer temperatures will return by the midweek.
