Winnipeg’s mayor took the podium for his second State of the City address, Thursday.

“Last year, I painted a vision of what Winnipeg could be in 2045. Today, we are taking the actions and steps necessary to put us even more on track toward the Winnipeg we want in the future, and the vision I presented a year ago,” said Bowman in a release.

In his first-ever address as mayor, Bowman told the Chamber of Commerce Luncheon that he would like to get rid of property taxes in his first term, calling them “regressive”.

Bowman said a new taxation model is required, even if it meant a new municipal sales tax as a replacement.

Over 1,000 people are expected to attend the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce event at the RBC Convention Centre.

Partial proceeds from ticket sales to the event will be donated to the Firefighters Burn Fund, a local charity.
