It is a mystery to many people passing through downtown Winnipeg.

On Monday, the answer will finally be revealed about what is the new display standing at the corner of Broadway and Edmonton Street.

“I know Winnipeggers will be delighted by this stunning artwork that reflects the history of this grand boulevard, while adding more beauty to our public spaces,” said Carol A. Phillips, the executive director of the Winnipeg Arts Council.

Winnipeg’s newest display of public art is called "heaven between.”

According to its designer, Vancouver based artist Bill Pechet, it was built to model everything about the street it placed on.

"It's a dome between two things, the dome of the legislature and the dome of the train station," Pechet said, referencing the two landmarks at either end of Broadway.

He explained the cut-out silhouettes of elm leaves inside the dome also represent the trees planted along Broadway more than 100 years ago.

“During the day you can see the shadows of the dome coming through and hitting the ground,” Pechet added.

The dome will also be illuminated with 24 light bulbs at night, positioned to look like a candle.

"Like a light that brings moths to the flame, I’m hoping that in the evening people will emanate here, and spend time looking at the light," Pechet said. “I think this boulevard is one of the most beautiful urban spaces in Canada.”

On Monday, at 5:30 pm, the sculpture will be lit up at a grand opening ceremony.

According to the Winnipeg Arts Council, there will also be a small plaza with seating and landscaping on the boulevard below the sculpture.
