At least nine people have died in Manitoba from flu-related illnesses so far this season, the Chief Provincial Health Officer said.

The province released a statement saying that they are experiencing an increase in cases of seasonal influenza, similar to other jurisdictions in Canada. The province said they have seen 480 lab-confirmed cases of influenza this season.

The increase in cases of seasonal influenza has increased demand for health services, and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is taking steps to manage resources, the province said.

Initial projections indicate Manitoba will see average to above-average numbers of flu cases this year, the province said.

Lab-confirmed cases don’t reflect the actual number of people infected with the virus, since many people who get sick manage the symptoms and recover at home. The province estimates between 10 and 20 per cent of Manitobans could become infected with the flu every year.

It also estimates that around 400 people will become hospitalized, and around 120 people will die each year due to the flu.

The province has information on flu symptoms and treatment on its website. You can also find statistical information on the flu in Manitoba, updated every Friday.
