Prince Edward has extended a show of support to the relatives of soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

The prince is on a royal visit and during a stop in Winnipeg he told military families that Canada's actions are making a difference and are respected around the world.

"I know very much some of the feelings you're going through as families," he said.

Prince Edward stopped to chat with several relatives of people who are currently serving overseas.

Michelle Day of Wawanesa says the prince's show of support was touching.

Manitoba Premier Gary Doer marked the royal visit by naming two northern lakes after Edward's children, Louise and James.

The Earl of Wessex is the third son and youngest child of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh and is seventh in line to the throne.
