A 39-year-old RCMP officer has been charged for attempted fraud over $5,000.

The charge stems from an investigation launched by Manitoba Public Insurance in connection with an Autopac claim for a collision involving a personal vehicle near Elphinstone, northwest of Winnipeg.

The suspect was off-duty when the alleged incident took place, said RCMP.

Inconsistencies in an insurance claim led MPI to investigate it. Officials then referred it to Manitoba Justice officials and RCMP were later notified.

Cpl. Houman Shoaai, 39, was charged with attempted fraud over $5,000.

An internal disciplinary process has been launched and Shoaai has been reassigned to administrative duties, said RCMP.
