An RCMP officer with the Opaskwayak Cree Nation detachment member has been charged with assault, said police.

In January 2011, RCMP were notified by the Commission for Public Complaints of a complaint regarding excessive force for an incident on Dec. 18, 2010.

An investigation was launched by RCMP.

A 28-year-old man from Opaskwayak Cree Nation had been arrested for causing a disturbance and was taken into custody to The Pas detachment.

Officers said the assault incident is alleged to have occurred during booking.

After a recommendation from Manitoba Justice, Const. Rene David Pashe, 32, was charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm on Oct. 7, said RCMP.

Pashe has been placed on administrative duties, pending an internal review, and has been transferred to the west district.

A court date has also been set for the end of November.
