More than a thousand people will sit down for a meal the might not have had were it not for the efforts of a handful of dedicated volunteers.

Siloam Mission expects between 1,200 and 1,300 people to show up for their Thanksgiving meal on Monday. They started preparing turkeys two months ago and expect to use 20 more turkeys than last year.

More than 70 volunteers will help prepare and serve the meal at their location at 303 Stanley St. The meal includes 150 turkeys, hundreds of pounds of potatoes, coleslaw and stuffing, and hundreds of litres of gravy and coffee.

Volunteers will serve the meal between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

On Sunday, families helped bake cookies that will be handed out at the Thanksgiving dinner.

“It’s a great opportunity for families to come down and just spend some time together, get to learn about what’s going on down here at Siloam, and just get involved in our thanksgiving celebrations," said Katy Atienza, volunteer coordinator for Siloam Mission.

The volunteers will be making heart and pumpkin shaped sugar cookies for the dinner on Monday.
