It's a rare day when you can find a Klingon sitting next to a man in a tuxedo, but it could happen Friday night at the Centennial Concert Hall. The evening is the premier of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s Sci-Fi Spectacular, hosted by Star Trek cast member George Takei.

Most people know Takei as Mr. Sulu from the original Star Trek television series.

“(Winnipeg’s) a fascinating place,” said Takei. "There's that human rights museum going up. It's a terrific looking building."

Takei will narrate the Sci-Fi Spectacular, which will feature music from classic science fiction film and television productions, like The Day the Earth Stood Still, Star Wars, and Star Trek. Takei expects to see a diverse crowd.

"There will be Klingons here, as well as Starfleet officers, and Romulan princesses, and Green Skinned slave girls," he said.

Takei won't slip into costume, and he won't do the chicken dance, as he did when he signed on to host Cincinnati's version of the Sci-Fi Spectacular and lead their Oktoberfest parade. "We had the hordes applauding dancing, laughing and enjoying a wonderful afternoon,” he said.

The WSO's Sci-Fi Spectacular runs Friday through to Sunday. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
