Boxing Day shoppers who lined up outside stores early Saturday morning got a cold welcome from Mother Nature.

Temperatures reached down to -38 C with the windchill around 8:00 a.m. Ice crystals hung in the air.

The sun will shine bright, but it won’t bring much warmth. The projected high on Saturday is -20 C, but the wind will make it feel like -32 C.

As cold as it got in Winnipeg, people in northern Manitoba woke up to extreme cold warnings from Environment Canada. They warned that temperatures could plummet to as much as -50 C with the windchill in places like Nelson House, Lynn Lake, Pukatawagan, Gillam, Brochet, Tadoule Lake, and Shamattawa.

The crisp, bright weather will hang around for most of the week, although temperatures will increase slightly later in the week.
