The City of Winnipeg says it's fortunate Thursday evening's storm wasn't worse.
More than 80 mm of rain fell in parts of Winnipeg. The city said the storm centred over downtown and the southwest area of the city, and classified it as one-in-100-years event.
The greatest intensity was measured at the University of Winnipeg. The community of Whyte Ridge experienced the most rain with 83.5 mm.
Environment Canada said it did receive an unconfirmed report of 102 mm of rain in Whyte Ridge.
The city says there were 62 reports of sewers backed up with raw sewage, 66 flooded basements and 25 dislodged manhole covers.
As a result of power failure, 10 traffic lights were completely out and 23 lights across the city were flashing.
Siloam Mission said it lost about $5,000 of material, including clothing, in its basement due to flooding.
"This is a home for folks and, definitely, when anything happens (to) the building or resources, it hurts everyone's heart a little," said Lindsay Smith from Siloam Mission.
Student Thiago Borges' basement apartment flooded.
"I didn't know what to do. I was really afraid and I could have lost everything if I wasn't here at home," he said.
He spent much of the day cleaning up his bathroom and drying out his soggy hardwood floors.
Manitoba Public Insurance said it had received 150 water-related claims for vehicle damage by Friday afternoon.
