A Winnipeg police officer is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act in connection to a crash in downtown.

The crash happened on April 16 around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Notre Dame Avenue and Donald Street. Photos from the scene showed a police car that had smashed into a building along with a smaller red car that was damaged.

Police in the area had taped off the crash site and placed several evidence markers on the ground.

The damaged police cruiser involved in the crash on April 16, 2023.

The driver of the red vehicle, who police said was a civilian, was taken to hospital to be treated for a broken rib. Two police officers were also taken to hospital for examination, but were medically cleared.

Because the injuries were serious, Manitoba's police watchdog – the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) – started an investigation.

On Wednesday, the IIU announced it had finished its probe into the crash. As a result, it said Winnipeg police Const. Landan Ramage has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with failing to use a siren and failing to drive with due regard to safety.

The charges against him have not been tested in court.

The Winnipeg Police Service tells CTV News the officer remains on active duty. It says as per its policy, a review of the incident will be conducted by the collision review board.

The IIU said it will not be commenting any further as the matter is now before the courts.
