The city is worried about the prospect of zebra mussels entering Winnipeg’s water supply.

A request for proposals has been tabled to come up with a mussel-control strategy at the Shoal Lake intake facility.

The deadline for submissions is November 20.

Zebra mussels have plagued Lake Winnipeg for the last two years and were detected in the Red River in North Dakota in 2010.

The invasive species attaches to hard surfaces like boats and docks, and can clog up pipes and hydro dams.
