The MLA for St. Norbert proposed a mandatory one metre buffer between cyclists and cars.

NDP's Dave Gaudreau put forward a private member's bill outlining the idea.

Currently, cars must stay a safe distance away when passing cyclists, but there is no minimum distance.

Gaudreau said the one metre rule would make roads safer for drivers and cyclists. Penalties for drivers breaking the rule would be two demerits and a $110 fine.

Transportation Minister Steve Ashton supports Gaudreau's proposal. Ashton thinks the bill is a good idea and said the province has examined similar rules in the past.

Bike Winnipeg Executive Director Mark Cohoe said cyclists feel unsafe when cars get too close. He thinks a clear guideline will protect cyclists and prevent accidents.

But not all drivers agree. One driver said he likes the idea, but worries it could cause accidents if cars veer too far into traffic while passing a bike.

He thinks roads should be widened to accommodate the proposed one metre rule.

Another driver said it might not make a difference, since cyclists don't stick close to the curb, and thinks bikes and cars should share responsibility on the roads.

Ontario implemented the same rule earlier this year.

The bill will be up for discussion at the Manitoba Legislature in February.
