Off-colour tap water might be off-putting, but it’s still safe to drink, says the City of Winnipeg.

A small number of residents are experiencing discoloured water as a result of increased demand on the city’s water system.

Although the cloudy water might not smell or taste pleasant, drinking it should not make people sick, says the city.

Discoloured water can occur when there is an increase or change of water flow from the distribution centre, says the city. Water main breaks and repairs, higher residential use or firefighting can contribute to such changes.

It is recommended that residents may want to refrain from using discoloured water for purposes requiring clean water such as laundry.
