Emergency crews rushed an 18-year-old woman to hospital in unstable condition from a stabbing in the downtown core Tuesday night.

Police said a suspect stabbed a woman in her upper body around 9:30 p.m. near Isabel Street in Winnipeg.

The victim has been upgraded to stable, said police. Initial reports suggested a man had been stabbed, but police confirmed Wednesday the victim was female.

An investigation showed the woman had been walking with friends near Elgin and Isabel when an unknown man approached and stabbed the woman. Police and emergency crews were called from a nearby business.

The suspect is described as a male, aboriginal in appearance, about 20 to 25 years old, with a heavy build.
