A day at the beach took an unexpected turn at Birds Hill Park, when a vehicle caught fire in the East Beach parking lot on Sunday.

Fire officials said the call came in around 4  p.m.

According to Jeff Hudson, chief of the Springfield Fire Department, the blaze started in the engine compartment of the first vehicle and spread to nearby cars.

Hudson said five vehicles were damaged in the fire, and other cars may have sustained smoke damage.

RCMP and conservation officers were also on scene to monitor a large crowd of onlookers.

No firefighters or bystanders were injured during the incident.
