RCMP said Wednesday a former Winnipeg police officer who died on Feb. 19 inside Headingley Correctional Centre passed away from natural causes.

Richard Dow was found unconscious inside the Headingley jail Tuesday morning. Corrections staff attempted to resuscitate the inmate but were unsuccessful.

Dow operated a modelling business while also serving on the police force years ago.

Last fall, a judge sentenced Dow to jail time after he previously pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual assault. Dow had pleaded guilty earlier in 2012 to 11 counts of sexual assault in connection with a series of incidents from 2000 to 2005.

An autopsy conducted on Wednesday found he died of natural causes and foul play is not suspected.

Sources said he had a heart attack.
