A Winnipeg feed mill is installing new infrared technology to weed out undesirable grain kernels.

Standard Nutrition Canada will receive $1.1 million, cost-shared by the province and Ottawa, to set up the new sorting device, the first of its kind in Canada.

The equipment removes grain infected with fusarium and ergot before it reaches animal feed.

Officials said this is expected to increase the value of grain in Manitoba by $4 million a year.

Standard Nutrition is matching the investment and adding eight new full time jobs to its St. Boniface plant.
