GODS LAKE NARROWS, Man. - The chief of a northern Manitoba First Nation says the inquest into the fatal RCMP shooting of a man on his reserve essentially condones killing indigenous people.

Chief Gilbert Andrews of the God's Lake First Nation says the inquest judge didn't condemn the 2011 shooting of Paul Duck or make any recommendations to prevent a similar tragedy.

He says his community questions whether the shooting was fuelled by racism, and people fear it could happen again because the officer was never held responsible.

Duck had used a gun to scare off some children who were vandalizing his sister's home.

He was walking toward some RCMP officers guarding a nearby fatal fire scene when an officer asked him three times to drop the firearm before he was shot.

Duck's family says in a statement that the tragedy could have been avoided if the officer hadn't been so quick to use his gun.
