A school bus driver faces multiple charges after allegedly trying to ram an RCMP cruiser on Thursday.

Police received a call around 9 p.m. from someone at a home. They told them that a man, possibly intoxicated, had left in an empty school bus.

Carman RCMP found the vehicle in La Riviere and tried to stop the driver, who pulled over to the wrong side of the road and reversed in the direction of the cruiser. The officers managed to get out of the way.

The driver tried to flee and in the process tried to hit the cruiser again, but the officers got out of the way a second time.

“It was just because of the quick action of our officers that they avoided injury,” said RCMP spokesperson Robert Cyrenne.

The driver eventually stopped, got out of the bus and the officers arrested him.

Joshua Pharaoh, 35, of La Riviere faces multiple charges and fines, including impaired driving, dangerous driving, and assault on a police officer with a weapon.

He is due to appear in court in Portage la Prairie on Monday.
