As temperatures dipped to -25 C in Winnipeg Wednesday evening, a portable heater may be to blame for a fire at a North End triplex.

Fire crews were called to the 100 block of Machray Avenue just after 7 p.m. after reports of flames coming out of a living room window.

Residents told CTV Winnipeg five people were inside the two-storey building when the fire broke out, but everyone managed to escape.

Platoon Chief Frank Leswick of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said one resident was being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but it wasn’t thought to be serious.

Residents said the fire was started by a portable heater on the main level, but investigators haven’t determined a cause. There is no estimate on the total cost of damages.
