Two women are dead after a head-on highway collision south of St. Norbert Sunday morning.

Around 6:15 a.m., St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 75, just north of Provincial Road 247.

RCMP said a car was travelling northbound in the southbound lane when it collided head-on with a southbound car.

The impact caused the northbound vehicle to go into the west ditch, where it caught fire, said RCMP.

The 21 year old driver from Winnipeg was the lone occupant of the vehicle. She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead, said RCMP.

RCMP said the other woman, a 26 year old from Winnipeg, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed, alcohol, and distracted driving are considered factors in the collision, RCMP said. Seatbelts were believed to have been worn at the time of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
