Winnipeggers woke up to a winter wonderland Monday just days after welcoming the start of spring.

According to Environment Canada, six centimeters of the white stuff fell in the city, turning it from green to white.

On Manitoba highways the snow created treacherous driving condition.

RCMP responded to 20 collisions Monday between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. on March 23.

Winnipeg police responded to five collisions Monday. In one case, a car smashed into a house in Elmwood.

Shooters Family Golf Centre, which had opened for the season, had to shut down the driving range today.

Meanwhile, it appears Stony Mountain Ski Area is considering reopening. It posted a message on Facebook Monday, asking people if it wanted more days on the snow.

The spring snowfall has created some fun for outdoors enthusiasts. There is enough snow to go sledding and the snow is wet enough to make perfect snowballs.

Significant spring snowfalls are not uncommon in southern Manitoba.

On average, Winnipeg receives 16.5 centimetres of snow in March, 10.6 cm in April and 2.6 cm in May.

River walk closed

The city announced Monday afternoon the river walk from the Osborne Bridge to the Main Street Bridge is closed to pedestrians because of the spring rise in the Assiniboine river level.

Barricades have been installed and light standards taken down.
