The College of Pharmacists of Manitoba has asked Brothers Pharmacy in Winnipeg to stop selling fentanyl testing kits.

The kits are meant to test whether certain drugs contain fentanyl. According to pharmacy owner Mike Watts, he was told that use of the product to test street drugs has not been approved by Health Canada.

The college said until it gets additional information from the manufacturer and Health Canada, it advises that the kits stop being sold.

Watts said he’s disappointed that he can’t sell them, but understands the college wants to err on the side of caution.

“We are trying to get ahead of this problem,” he said. “We want to try to give people using illicit drugs an informed decision about what they’re using.”

Watts said he plans to work to gather as much data as possible about the reliability of the tests.
