Winnipeg's Canada Day living flag has officially broken the city of Victoria's record.

About 3,400 Winnipeggers braved morning rain and lined up for hours at the Legislative grounds Friday to create the city's first-ever living flag for Canada Day, said the Downtown BIZ, who coordinated the event.

Winnipeggers rose to a challenge put forth by the city of Victoria, to see which city's flag could be bigger. Victoria has been creating living flags since 2006 and the event attracted roughly 2,100 people last year and about 3,000 this year.

A little rain didn't stop Lilly Polnau from coming out to show her Canadian pride Friday morning.

"I feel that it's wonderful to be loyal to Canada," she said. "It really chokes me up to see so many people coming out this way."
