Police have charged a suspect after a double shooting left two people seriously injured on Dakota Tipi First Nation Thursday morning.
Irvine William Tyson Pashe, 31, is charged with two counts of attempt murder, break-and-enter to commit a crime, uttering threats, and five firearm related charges.
Pashe was remanded in custody, will appear on Monday, in Portage la Prairie Provincial Court.
The victims remain in serious but stable condition.
RCMP locked down the community of Dakota Tipi First Nation after two people were shot in separate locations in the early morning on Thursday.
Relatives identified Chris Pashe, 53, and his niece Gracie Prince, 30, as the victims of the shooting.
The community remained in lockdown for several hours while police searched for the suspect. They eventually arrested a suspect without incident after a tip from the public.
On Friday, community leaders held a news conference to demand action to curb violence, which they say is fuelled by poverty and addiction. Band councillor Karl Stone also criticized the RCMP response and said the community needs its own police force.
Stone said while police had formed a perimeter around the community there was no active sweep within Dakota Tipi.
On Thursday, CTV reported there was a heavy police presence searching for the suspect, including police dog services and the emergency response unit.
Police have not responded to Stone’s comments.
