Police have arrested a suspect after two people were shot on the Dakota Tipi First Nation early Thursday morning.
RCMP were called to the area around 4:30 a.m. after reports of a shooting.
Police said a man and a woman were shot at two different homes in the community. Both have been transported to hospital in serious condition.
“A suspect has been arrested in Dakota Tipi First Nation shooting. #rcmpmb will still remain on scene for an extended period,” RCMP said in a tweet.
They said they made the arrest after a receiving tip.
"An arrest without incident, a dangerous suspect in custody, a successful day following a tragedy early this morning," said Sgt. Bert Paquet.
Police said they were searching for Tyson Pashe, 31, of Dakota Tipi First Nation in connection with the incident.
Officers told people to "be vigilant", stay inside their homes and limit their movement.
There are no active schools on the reserve, but there are some near the community, which RCMP are patrolling.
There is a heavy police presence searching for the suspect, including police dog services and the emergency response unit.
Police asked Dakota Tipi First Nation residents not to broadcast or share police’s location on social media.
No information has been released about what might have led to the shooting.
One woman who spoke to CTV News on condition of anonymity because she fears for her safety said she wasn’t surprised by the shooting. “We knew this was going to happen sooner or later," she said.
The woman said drugs have become a problem in the community.
"It's frightening especially when my great-grandchildren are in there, you know, and my grandkids," she said.
RCMP thanked members of the community for their help.
“(Manitoba RCMP) thanks all the residents of Dakota Tipi First Nation for your patience & understanding. Your safety is our priority,” they said in a tweet.
