Winnipeg’s own Burton Cummings was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the Juno Awards Sunday night, for his half-century of accomplishments.
The artist made a name for himself as part of the rock and roll band The Guess Who, before breaking out on his own in 1979.
Cummings dedicated the award to Winnipeg.
“First and foremost, I share this and dedicate this to my hometown Winnipeg,” Cummings said to the crowd at the Junos. “I learned everything in Winnipeg that would equip me for what was going to happen. This really belongs in Winnipeg.”
Cummings also dedicated the award to his mother, who passed away two years ago. He said he was honoured to receive the award and thanked the many people who have been a part of making his career.
Another standout at the 2016 Juno Awards was Toronto singer The Weeknd, who took home Best Single and Best Album of the Year.
Burlington, Ontario’s ‘Walk Off the Earth’ was named Group of the Year. Alessia Cara grabbed Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
