The Crown concluded its case Thursday against Mark Edward Grant for the death of Candace Derksen.

Grant has pleaded not guilty in the case, which dates back to 1984.

The last Crown witness, one of two officers who questioned Grant after his arrest in 2007, took the stand Thursday for a cross examination.

The defence noted that throughout videotaped statements made by Grant to police during an interview, he continued to stress his innocence.

The defence also argued that without DNA evidence, police had nothing to suggest Grant was guilty. During the course of the trial, the defence has repeatedly questioned the reliability of DNA evidence and the methods used to gather it from the scene.

The Crown has argued Grant's DNA and hairs were found at the crime scene.

Candace Derksen, 13, disappeared while walking home from school in November 1984. Her body was found in a shed, weeks later.

Grant was arrested in May 2007 and charged with first-degree murder for Derksen's death after a cold-case police unit began investigating.

The trial is set to resume Friday.
