The family of a worker who died after being pinned under a cottage is in mourning following the man's death.

"It's the worst thing that could have happened to our family. There can't be anything that could be worse," said Michael Mooney.

His 23-year-old nephew and godson, who was named after him, died on Monday after an incident in the RM of Victoria Beach.

RCMP said Mooney and two other men were trying to jack up a cottage when the structure shifted and began to slide. It collapsed and pinned him underneath. Mooney was rushed to hospital but later died.

His family is still reeling from the death.

"It's just a tragic, tragic loss," said Mooney's uncle.

Safety Services Manitoba said that between 2000 and 2009, eight people were killed in workplace accidents.

Safety Services Manitoba said it's up to the employer and employee to assess the risks and make sure the proper steps and precautions are taken at every job site.

"There (are) hazards in every workplace. So it really depends on the specific workplace – what needs to be put in place, but it is a reminder that there are hazards everywhere," said Judy Murphy from Safety Services Manitoba.

Twenty-three-year-old Michael Mooney was the youngest of two boys in his family. Relatives said he enjoyed racing quads, had a great sense of humour and was studying to become a carpenter. He would have completed the program on July 1.

RCMP and Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health are investigating the fatal incident.
