As the sun rose on game day Monday in Winnipeg, thousands of travelling soccer fans have their feet back on solid ground. But they don't plan on using them to get to the football stadium turned soccer pitch.

"I’m thinking bus at this stage. It's the most economical option. It would be a bit too far to walk," said Tom Bell and Alex Kelly laughing. The two are fans from who travelled from Australia.

For those staying downtown, busing seems to be the first choice.

Winnipeg Transit is offering increased service on Route 160. It's running every 10 minutes starting two hours before each match.

Many of those extra buses are packed to the doors with fans chanting for their home country’s team.

"It's been pretty hectic, pretty crazy,” said bus driver Tony Gibson. “But it isn't anything we haven't seen before with the new stadium."

Other than the beefed up bus service, there's also four park and ride locations around the city as well as shuttles from downtown hotels.

These services cost $5 but, just like a Bombers game, all bus rides home are free.

To avoid delays at parking lots, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Transportation Plan suggests those driving to the Winnipeg Stadium pre-purchase their parking pass online.

Many cars in the parking lot Monday were sporting licence plates from all over the United States. Drivers like Gregory Francis - who came from Wisconsin with friends. He spent more than 15 hours on the road to get to Winnipeg. The group capped the drive off by getting lost by going to the wrong university campus.

“But every window we asked to get rolled down was rolled down and helped us find our way here. So it worked out," he said, while hosting a tailgate party on his vehicle decked out in red, white and blue.

But other drivers had a calmer experience getting to the stadium.

"I’ve gone to a lot of major sporting events in America, and this was a piece of cake," said Jim Murphy.

"If you've ever been to a football game in the United States, you're stuck in traffic for at least three or four hours," added Brie Wallace.

Cyclists are getting parking perks on game days. Those riding to the stadium can use a free valet service provided by Bicycle Valet Winnipeg.
