A downtown Winnipeg landmark is set to shut its doors for good late Friday.

The Greyhound bus depot off Portage Avenue will close Friday at 11:59 p.m.

The company has relocated its terminal near the airport at Wellington Avenue on the Richardson International Airport campus.

The new facility opens Saturday at 6 a.m.

The company has made plans to help travelers get downtown. A Greyhound spokeswoman says once a bus stops to drop off cargo at the new station, travelers will have the option to continue on to a pick up spot on Fort Street for no extra charge.

It is the first new facility Greyhound has built in 20 years.

The 30,000 square foot building will serve passengers as well as shipping customers.

Greyhound says the company has outgrown the old facility on Portage Avenue, which has been around for more than 45 years.

Once Greyhound vacates the Portage Avenue space, the University of Winnipeg plans to transform the building into a new facility for students that would include a bookstore, classrooms and a student pub.
