The Keeping the Fires Burning event honoured nine aboriginal elders Thursday for their efforts to preserve indigenous culture.

Hundreds gathered at the Convention Centre for the celebration, including the eldest elder from Oxford House.

Sarah Harper is 107 years old. She speaks Cree and with the help of a translator told CTV she's surprised by the honour.

Harper's granddaughter Rose Knott said the elder speaks to her and her family every day.

“I really like listening to her stories, she's very alert and sees things way back," said Knott.

The event has honoured more than 90 indigenous grandparents since it started 12 years ago. Those inducted into the circle have made significant contributions to the advancement of aboriginal peoples and passed on traditional knowledge and practices.
