A fire at a home on a Manitoba First Nation has claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl.

Little Hope Richards was killed in a house fire early Tuesday morning on the Sandy Bay First Nation.

Fire fighters got the call at about 3:30 a.m. Witnesses say it took just 15 minutes for the home to burn to the ground.

There were 12 people home at the time, and 11 managed to escape, but not Hope. She was trapped in a bedroom and could not escape the flames.

The grade-three student had just celebrated a birthday on Jan. 23, 2009.

Sandy Bay is a community of just 3000.
